Transactional Net Margin Method

The transactional net margin method (TNMM) examines the net profit margin relative to an appropriate base, such as costs, sales, or assets, and compares it with margins earned by independent companies in comparable transactions. It is the most widely used method because net margins tolerate minor differences.

TNMM is typically applied to the party performing less complex functions and not owning valuable intangibles, known as the tested party, since its results can be benchmarked more reliably. Common profit level indicators include operating margin on sales, return on total costs, and return on assets employed generally.

Because net margins absorb many operating expense differences, TNMM tolerates a wider range of product and functional differences than price or margin based methods, making comparable data easier to find. However, a solid functional analysis and consistent multi-year data remain essential to a reliable benchmarking set.
